Lau is now the eldest member in Legislative Council. He considered to retire from the chairman of Heung Yee Kuk in near future. The successor may be the Honourable Cheung Hok Ming, another member of Legislative Council.
In 1974, Castle Peak Estate in Tuen Mun was renamed to San Fat Estate in honour of Chan Yat San and Lau Wong Fat.
Quitting Liberal Party
In September 2008, Selina Chow, the former chairwoman of Liberal Party, complained that Lau Wong Fat had been canvassing for the 's Cheung Hok-ming, her main competitor, and this led to her defeat in the Hong Kong legislative election, 2008. Later, Liberal's acting chairwoman, Miriam Lau, confirmed Lau Wong Fat had submitted his resignation letter and the party accepted him to quit the party.
